Each key ring is stamped with Smeltdown’s signature makers mark. The Smeltdown makers mark is symbolic of a fire in shape but its meaning goes further than the critical element essential for blacksmithing. The symbol is stylised from the Theban Alphabet. In ancient times, the purpose of using the Theban Alphabet was to abstract it from the writer's native language. This causes the writer to concentrate more fully upon the inscription and the greater task at hand. For Smeltdown, this parallels the focus and immersion felt when blacksmithing. The concentration needed to unpack the language of metal and craft it into beautiful objects. Through forging, the secrets of the metal are revealed through form, texture and shape.

Introducing the Scavengers Teddy! This adorable miniature is a play on the Scavengers Daughter, a 16th century torture device that was designed to have the opposite effect to the rack, whereby the victim was compressed as opposed to being stretched.
I am captivated by how the history of its counterpart is mitigated by its un-intimidating size and doe-eyed cuteness. The notion of macabre and curious in contrast with whimsy.
The Scavengers Teddy sits upright on its own so it’s easy to display. Alternatively, the device can be separated from the teddy and hung as wall art. Whichever way you choose to display this playful creation, it makes a fabulous talking point!
